Taquería El Califa de León

Taquería El Califa de León is a Tacos restaurant in Mexico City (San Rafael), $$; open Mon–Sun 11:00–02:00.

The world's first Michelin-starred taco stand (star lost in 2026)-four tacos, one grill, a standing counter. Since 1968, this 10-foot-wide taqueria in San Rafael has served four perfect tacos: Gaonera (thinly sliced beef filet seared with salt and lime), bistec, chuleta, and costilla, all on hand-pressed corn tortillas. Michelin gave it one star in 2024-the first taco stand in the world to earn the honor, but it lost its star in May 2026 and is now Michelin Recommended. No seats, no reservations, just cash and patience. El Califa de León's 2024 Michelin star made global headlines as the first ever awarded to a taco stand, and its rare 2026 loss of that star drew almost as much attention, cementing it as one of the most talked-about entries in the Guide's Mexico City coverage.
